A Chocolate Maker’s Journey: Connecting with Solomon Islands Farmers

As a passionate chocolate maker, I often find myself lost in the rich, velvety world of cacao. But nothing compares to the transformative experience of meeting the farmers who cultivate this precious crop. Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to the Solomon Islands, where I met Anges, a dedicated cacao farmer whose story deeply resonated with me.

A Warm Welcome

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the entire community, who guided us to a serene seated area. It was here that I first heard Anges’ inspiring story—a tale of family legacy and passion. Taking over her father’s farm, she shared how farming cacao is not just a job for her; it’s a calling, a bond that runs deep within her heart.

A Taste of Connection

Later, I sat with Anges as we sampled the chocolates crafted from her cacao back in the UK. As we indulged in the flavours, we delved into conversations about her farming practices. Anges has taken her father’s teachings to heart while also embracing innovative advice from chocolate expert Zoe, whose wealth of knowledge in fermentation and harvesting practices has inspired farmers around the globe.

The Heartfelt Care for Cacao

What struck me most about Anges was her profound connection to her cacao. She sings as she harvests, imbuing the process with love and intention. “I don’t want to 'smoke my babies,’” she said, reflecting on her past methods of smoke-drying cacao. Now, she is committed to the super-premium market, opting for traditional sun-drying techniques that enhance the flavour profile of her beans.

Anges explained that in the bulk market—where mass-produced chocolate dominates—cacao is often smoke-dried to save time. This process, she noted, can impart a smokey flavour that is masked by artificial additives in the final product. In contrast, as a chocolate maker who values quality over quantity, I seek out beans like Anges’ that are carefully sun-dried in natural light, allowing the true essence of the cacao to shine.

A Shared Passion

Our conversation turned to the shared love we have for our products. I confessed to Anges that I often hug my sacks of cacao and talk to my chocolate. Hearing her laugh in response was a comforting reminder that I’m not alone in my passion—this synergy between farmer and chocolate maker creates a powerful connection.

Anges and I may be worlds apart, but our love for cacao unites us. The care and dedication we both pour into our craft echo in the final product, culminating in chocolates that tell a story of love, patience, and tradition.

The Beauty of Partnership

This journey has reinforced my belief in the importance of ethical sourcing and strong partnerships with farmers like Anges. The depth of flavour in our chocolates is a direct reflection of the thoughtful processes employed on the farm. Each bite is not just a taste; it’s a connection to the land, the people, and the love that nurtures the cacao.

As I return to my workshop, I carry with me not just cacao, but the spirit of Anges and the community that supports her. Together, we are crafting beautiful products that celebrate the art of chocolate making—one delicious piece at a time.

In the end, it’s not just about the chocolate; it’s about the stories we share, the connections we build, and the passion that drives us to create. Here’s to the journey ahead, and to the farmers like Anges who inspire us every step of the way.
